Dry Drunk?

sorry but i've got a question.  what is a dry drunk exactly?  there have been people I have come across, not personally, who have been calling themselves recovered for years yet there are behaviors I do not think are really recovery material.  What exactly is a dry drunk?  - Does being Recovered mean more than just not drinking?  I think so but I have seen some recovered people (or hearing) of being unfaithful and doing other things not appropriate.  Just a question to you all who have the knowledge.  thanks.

Hi Momma,

The term dry drunk is generally used to describe an alcoholic who is not drinking but who is exhibiting the "bad" behaviors usually associated with drinking.

As far as does being recovered mean more than just not drinking....in my humble opinion...ohhhhh yes it does!!! biggrin

Recovery means something different to everyone.  Each person gets to decide how much of a 12 step program they want to have.  For some alcoholics just not drinking anymore might be enough.  This applies to al-anon members too.  We can just enjoy the meetings.  We can just enjoy the fellowship.  We can just choose to read the literature.  Or perhaps we can want more and actually work the steps and try to put them into practice in our daily lives.  Each of us gets to decide how "recovered" we want to be! smile

Great question, thanks for asking!

Yours still not recovered enough!
David

MMia,

My Ahsober has not drank in over 20 years. He left 3 years ago. Going thru the things I have gone thru sober with him are way more difficult than what I went thru with him drinking. Go figure. If you google dry drunk syndrome there is a very informative article from Minnesota that at least sheds some light on the subject.

In support,
Nancy

I think its true. I currently know a 28 year sober alcholic. His life is one hell of a mess, he has money problems galore, health problems galore.  He certainly goes to the meetings faithfully and gets a lot out of them. At the same time he really is not dealing with his problems.  He certainly calls himself "sober" but I'm not sure he is healthy.  I like his honesty and plain spokeness a great deal but his lack of an ability to take care of himself precludes anything else.

Does being Recovered mean more than just not drinking?  -MommaMia

To me recovery is when the person is soul searching and working on their emotional health. An A can be sober and never have any awareness. Often dry drunk(s) or those periods are much worse than the using times.

We who love A's can act out & be sicker than the A's themselves, I have my own sobriety/recovery program. A's pick up substances, we pick up people. We can both have exteme denial. Honest soul searching is what recovery is all about.
