I was talking to my AH about his daughter attending birthday/slumber party. He mentioned that his daughter began the topic conversation of "pot" that one of the other children had said the parents were doing at the party.
I was completely appaulled!!!! I have a severe NO TOLERANCE for drugs in my household. And to think that my child--granted this is my step daughter, but still--would go to another child's house and those "adults" would be that to do pot during their child's party!?!?
He went on to tell me that he talked openly to this child's parent, saying that "Yeah, that might have made your night a little easier, eh?"
What kind of person did I marry?!?!? I am shocked to think that another parent would go ahead and do drugs at a birthday party with other peoples children!!!!!! WOWZERS!!
My AH seems to think nothing of it.....that there are people that are 'normal' that do drugs---ones that aren't criminals, etc. Um....so that makes this OK?
He told me later on that he brought this up with his sister, who is a doctor of psychology. Apparently, I'm the only one that this seems to truly distress. He explained to her my view and that I was 'upended' over this, but that he didn't have the same point of view because in "his day in age, this was/is normal." UGH!!! My point was that it is highly inappropriate for "adults" to take other peoples children in for a child's birthday party, and do illegal drugs!! IF DHS or the police had any wind of that, your child would be placed in protective custody over the matter!!!
Sheeish!! I know I can be overly paranoid about the most microscopic issue, but really people!?!? Just a little common sense here?!??

I agree with you 100%. And as drugs, including pot, are illegal therefore anyone using IS a criminal. Come on, if you can't abstain for a few hours, there's a problem there.
No need to second guess yourself. These folks are WAAAAAY out of line. I'm a zero tolerance kind of gal, and I wouldn't even have a glass of wine when I'm responsible for other people's children.
Aw, come on. There's nothing wrong with pot. It's all a government ploy to keep "the man" down.
;)
Of course I feel strongly that pot is an inappropriate substance for anyone to be using at the get go. Top it off around children? Very, VERY irresponsible. Would be the same to me as them getting blitzed drunk around the kids instead.
Addicts... yup. Not much else I can say to add to that.
Wow, ummm I don't know what I would do if that happened to my children.
I just want to say thank you for bringing this up. My girls are at the age that sleepovers are going to be more frequent. And even though I know that parents, how well do you really know how people are behind closed doors. So I will have a talk with them.
I agree with you, it is a problem.
Yours in reocvery, Mandy

I personally see pot as no better or worse than alcohol, (that's a lie, I think alcohol is worse) and people drink around kids all the time. I know my daycare provider drinks wine at the end of the day and as long as it's not a problem for her it's not a problem for me. Now if she gets a dui and goes to jail - different story!!! But, there are a lot of people who don't think twice about pot because it's not a "hardcore" drug... So I think if it were me... I would probably talk to them about the appropriateness of that around MY child/ren and then I would avoid sending my kids there again. I don't really have any strong opinions about pot but I wouldn't appreciate someone openly doing it in front of my children.
I kinda go with cg here. If four adults, say, were to share a joint, I would consider that the equivalent of four adults sharing a bottle of wine, which I would find acceptable in this case.
Thing is, not everybody has a drug or alcohol problem. Most people can indulge to appropriate amounts, and then stop. I haven't smoked pot for thirty years, but I certainly had one beer, or one glass of wine, when my kids had sleepovers. I would never have allowed myself to get in such shape that I couldn't drive, for example, but mild social drinking or drug use in your own home is no big deal.
As for the illegal aspect, maybe it's because the drug laws here are different. I can't remember the last time I heard of someone being charged, much less sentenced to anything, for possession of personal amounts of pot. For all practical purposes, pot is decriminalized here, and has been for some time. And, no, society is not crumbing around our ears.
Because we have been hurt, so badly, by other people's drug and alcohol use, we tend to be more sensitive to it. But, 90% of people are NOT alcoholics nor addicts - they use drugs and drink responsibly.
Speeding is illegal, too, and everyone does it and most times no-one gets hurt.......but I don't want anyone doing it while they are caring for my child.
I don't want them using ANY mind-altering substances and I ESPECIALLY don't want them breaking the law. Sets a poor example. Sets the bar low for acceptable behavior.
