This morning I read the sotries that showed the alanon promise of "you will laugh more". I laughed until my sides ached. It brought to my mind a story.
I have 3 dogs in the house. We have 2 doggie doors to the back yard and they come and go as they wish when we are at home.
I had made an appointment for a Kirby vacuum salesman to come and demonstarate a vacuum. I opened the front door for the Kirby man. One of my Schnauzers, Toby, ran in thru the back doggie door and greeted us. The man looked past me and saw Toby...with an adult dead bird hanging out of his mouth. EWWWW. He asked if I let them play with dead birds in the house.
I had to dispose of the bird, alcohol my hands, even though I used paper towels and plastic bag. The I 'scoped" Toby. I use a plastic cup, a little Scope mouthwash, diluted about twice as much with water. I stand them in the tub and slosh it in their mouth. Then I was able to come and watch the demo. By the way. I bought the Kirby.
Another time Rocky And George (schnauzer and Scottie) killed a possum in t he back yard and were rolling in it. What a mess. At least nobody was at the front door watching and I was able to celan them up.
Have any of them got themselves "skunked" yet? My Jack Russell Terrier has a deep respect for skunks after his run-in with one. An indoor dog with doggie doors like yours, he wondered why he had to stay outside for a week last summer. We bathed him in every solution we could think of including tomato juice, which a neighbor said would work like a charm. I guess it all comes as part of the love of animals. LOL!!!
Thanks for the smile,
Diva

I love the thought of you "scope-ing" your dog in the shower!!! The thought of getting him to "swish and spit"!!! But hey, you bought the Kirby! The salesman must have been very happy!
My 120 lb mutt came down with Coon Hound's Disease. It's from eating or being bitten by a racoon. My mutts had the run of the woods and ate everything (including a skunk one time which took over a year for the smell to work it's way out of his body). Coon Hound's Disease slowly and completly paralizes them from the back to the front but will, eventually, work it's way out from the front to the back. The vet said most people put the dog down because although it will go away it could be months. And the care of a totally paralized dog is too much for most people. We are not most people!!! So, my poor mutt was a lump within a month. He couldn't even bark, lift his head, we had to spoon feed him, well, you can imagine. We carried him upstairs to the shower once a day. OMG, just remembering.....Anyway, one day I had the brilliant idea to get a diaper on him. Because cleaning his messes was the worst. By this time he had started to schooch. He would raise his head a couple of inches and let it fall and drag his body forward. So, he would schooch out of the diaper. Ofcourse the diaper didn't fit anyway so I got the duck tape. I was so proud of myself!!!LOL!! When I came home from work that night he had scootched himself over to an antique stand a few feet away, schootched out of the diaper and chewed off 2 legs of the stand and it had fallen on top of him and there he was! Knick knacks all over his body and an experssion of utter shock. He recovered completly within 3 months or so. The vet was so impressed with us as he never had a bed sore, he was so well taken care of. LOL! If she had only seen the doggie diaper!!
I have never heard of coons disease. My dogs killed a possum in the yard once. And we are not far froom open fields, so the possibility of a raccoon is not that far off.
I am like you. I am not most pet owners. I wiould have changed teh diapers or whatever it took until he got better.
We had a dog once who had a seizure disorder. He was 17 months old when he died. But we did everything we could for him including taking him on a 6 hour drive one way to UT small animal veterinary hospital where we consulted with a dog neurologist. It was just too far gone. They never found what caused them before he died.
I am happy for your MUTT that you were one of those special per owners who go to any length.
