Sober is kind of a state of mind. I think of it as past the initial stages and working a program. Dry just means they're not drinking. With no recovery program they're just white knuckling it and still have the same behaviors and thought patterns. They don't actually change just because they stop drinking. Sometimes they even get worse to be around because they have used alcohol for a basic coping skill for life. When that's gone too, they have no coping skills. That's why they need a recovery program, to learn how to live sober.
Make sense? Hope this helps.

My husband is very much in the dry stage. Is there any literature directly aimed at coping with a dry alcoholic? because I am finding it harder than when he was drinking.
