I was brought up with a drinker all my life. My dad, he is not like that today.(Thank Gawd), He can have a few drinks and be okay, his personality does not change nowadays. I no longer get anxious about his drinking. But for years my mind was a box of bad memories. A few days ago something good happened, I had a memory about myself and my dad, a HAPPY one..lol I know my childhood was not all bad. But for so long It's all I can remember. For a happy memory to appear was awesome. It showed me how far I have come in my recovery. Im into my 18th month in the Fellowship and I still have a few not so great days, and I can slip like anyone else, But I have changed and I am continuing to change every day.
I am so greatful to this fellowship and to AA, for the Experience, Strength & Hope, from them all, the friendship and example of everyone in it.....
If you are new to Al-Anon or AA, and you cannot make up your mind what its all all about. Ask yourself a few questions..
.. Am I happy with my life today???
Do I want my life to change for the better?
Do I want to become ME again, live MY life?
If "Yes" to them all, well stick about and watch the miracle...lol
One of the gifts of recovery (especially during my 4th step inventory) was that I started remember that my dad wasn't "all bad" when I was growing up!
I too had gotten to a place where I could only remember the bad things. Suddenly I remembered how he used to bring my brother and I big mugs of root beer home some evenings. That root beer was appropriately called "Dad's Root Beer" and man it was soooooo good! I don't find it often on the shelves, but when I do, I always get one just for the nostaligia of it. It still tastes mighty fine too!
