Yesterday evening I told my story for the first time at a Speaker Meeting.
It was an amazing experience, I highly recommend it!!
The meeting was in San Antonio about an hour and a half from where I live and I and some friends from my home group drove over. We went a little early and had an early dinner at a Thai restaurant. It was my first time to eat Thai food and it was deeeelicous!!! A couple of my friends ordered sushi , and after some soul searching..hehe.. I decided to take one up on an offer to taste some of it. It was delicious!!!
From there we drove over to where the meeting was being held. I was reeaaallllyyy nervous and began wishing I hadn't eaten.
A member of AA spoke before me, and I was glad for the time to sit and listen to his story and take my mind off of my nervousness for a while....though, in honesty, my heart was pounding so loud I had a hard time hearing him sometimes.
Then it was time! and my first sponsor was there and got up and introduced me. Gulp!!!
I stepped up to that podium, took a hugh breath and said a quick prayer and let 'er rip!
I spoke for 50 minutes...slightly over the time I had been asked to speak for..he he..go figure . After about 15 minutes my heart slowed down to normal pace and I realized it was gonna be fine. And it was!
The AA speaker before me had made mention that he had spoken several times over his years in the program, and that it was, for him, like doing a 5th step. I have to agree with him totally.
It was scary. It was emotional. Those 40 or so people know things about me now that my own mother doesn't know! It was liberating, and uplifting. It was exhausting. When I was done, I felt the same kind of freedom and warmth inside as I had upon completing my 5th step. That 5th step took 6 hours, and this time I got that in slightly under 1 ! woohooo!!
And for those of you who knew I was doing this and threatened me with butt kickin's and such if I didn't do it, I DID include the screw story! I wasn't gonna, because of time, but if just came out anyway!
Anyway, I want to thank all of you that encouraged me to do this, and for your good thoughts. I felt you there with me. I appreciate you all so much.
For those of you who ever get asked to speak, or who feel the calling, I say go for it! It is something you will get so very much out of!!!
I thought about you last evening, David, and was sorry I could not attend. I sent some calming influences your way. Sounds like your speech went over well. That's great!
Love to ya,
Diva

I am so happy for you that you continue to grow and change through time. One thing I have noticed is how stuck in my ways I am with the A. The constant crisis left me very rigid and closed down.
Well done David! I am always terrified to speak in public. :blah: It is probaly my least favorite thing to do. If I ever have to do that, I'll remember that story.
Love and blessings to you and the "boys".

P.S. Don't ever let "the boys" get a hold of the screw, you'll never get it back! lol

Congrats david,,,stepping out of our "comfort zone" is difficult and we like to project into the future, of how things might end up. If we dont try something new once in a while , we will never know if we can do it or not. I am glad you did it, and now you see it wasnt as difficult as you thought. I wasnt there, however , I am sure you did just fine. Its like taking that first step to walk through those doors of alanon, took a very long time for me, but I am so glad I did it, and wish I would have done it sooner in my life. So in a nutshell, you stepped "out of your box" and stepped onto the box! Good for you!
