Spontaneous Remission?

The other day I posted a link as a reply on a thread and it talked about the ineffectiveness of AA but the thing I found most interesting in the article was the statement that about 5% of alcoholics have spontaneous remission every year.  So basically they just quit with no help and are "better".  I have seen some posts around this topic and am wondering what everyone thinks about this.  Also wonder what the statistic is for how many people become alcoholics every year?

That title caught my attention.  I have heard of people that just decide that they don't want to drink anymore and quit without the aid of any program and it sticks.  My question for them is are they really addicts or do they just have great mind over matter power than the rest of us?  I do believe that when a person has completely made up their mind, body, and soul to change something in their life that they have complete control and choice to do so.  Interesting topic that I want to research more too.  I'm not sure about the stats question though, curious myself.
Have a wonderful day.

Peace,
Twinmom~

I have read about the remission too.  But the thing to keep in mind also the rate of relapses too.

For more information on the different type of drinkers out there, read page 20 of the AA Big book - it talks about "spontaneous remission".

Other than that, I have found that dwelling on statistics tends to defelect my thinking and causes me to doubt that recovery is possible. Which is nonsense because I am experiencing it and witnessing it all around me. So for me the only statistic that matters is "did I stay sober today?".

well, I do know that there are many different ways to get sober and stay sober. I also know that the way I do it is how it works for me.

Well if you think about it, every disease has a spontaneous remission rate, cancer, diabetes, etc. etc. Although alcohol isn't very high I can't quite get how this happens. Perhaps the mind, body, spirit is what causes remission in the other diseases too? I just decide one day I'm not going to have cancer anymore and it goes away? It's just a strange concept.
