I'm venting my frustations, anxieties, fears, and concerns. I would love any feedback anyone has, both good and bad.... My son is 16, he will be 17 very soon. As I have posted previously, up until this year, at least to my knowledge, he's been a good kid. Good grades, great in sports, active in scouts, no issues. Not the case this school year. Skipping class, smoking pot, drinking, failing grades, anger directed at me....I finally found a counselor that he seems to relate to. This counselor specialized in teenage boy issues. He's been seeing him once a week. He seemed to have made some progress the first couple weeks. We could actually talk. I really like the counselor he's seeing, he doesn't seem to sugar coat anything and pretty much tells my son and me how it is. Through the counselor some things have come out. He's mad at me for staying with my AH. Yes he is his father and they have a pretty good relationship most of the time. The relationsip was better when my AH was drinking cause he was more of a friend then a dad. It's come out that they used to smoke together too. Even thought my AH has been sober for 5 months, our son doesn't believe it's for good, I don't blame him. I'm not convinced either, but he also doesn't believe I'm going to leave if he doesn't stay sober. I get that I'm the one to shoulder the anger at this age. I'm working thru it....One of my major frustations is my husband still won't take a stand with him. He is still trying to be the good guy, the buddy...Sunday night our son was acting weird, phone was ringing alot, he'd leave the room, look around to see who was around before talking. My radar was screaming something was up....So yesterday I came home for break after my son was home from shcool. Sure enough, found half dozen kids in the basement...smoking...I was furious...Mad at my son for doing it again, and mad at my AH for not believing me. In order to recover credits, my son proposed going to a national guard youth challenge program.....yep a boot camp. In the beginning I was completley against it. It's a 22 week program. After talking to his counselor, I agreed to entertain the idea and go to an orientation. The orientation was this weekend...he turned in the application...We won't know anything tell the 20th of this month. I waited until my anger subsided before I tried to talk about what I came home too. All he could say was he was sorry...That he was going to boot camp in less then a month and then he would stop... His counselor doesn't believe he has any additction issues with anything, and I believe that too, I'm just so freaked out by what it could turn in to. Where that blurry line is...
Tough one. I know what I did when I was a teen and I came out ok, I guess it just depends on the person. The boot camp sounds like a great idea!! (where do i sign mine up LOL) It would give you a break from eachother and perhaps he will learn to be more respectful. Just a thought. I don't think you can win here, if he wants to use you staying as and excuse he will, I get the other end...you keep making my dad's leave...so really you just can't win!
Don't know the answer to your dilema, but I guess if your son wants to go to boot camp, I would send him. He obviously sees a need to go. As far as the counselors assessment regarding addiction.......is this person trained to determine if a person has an addiction problem? Just wondering. Oh, I have a son who has struggled with addiction, so I know if they ask or want help.......GO FOR IT! You will be in my prayers..... God Bless, mel123
