I just got accepted to the nursing program here!! WHoooHooo! I am honored because it is a competitive program and there are not many spots open. I applied last year and didn't make it, I was pretty bummed out because I felt like there was nothing I could do. I retook some classes and applied again, now I'm in! Silly to say this, but I don't know if I'm going to go. The program is two years long, and is a little spendy. I'd have to give up my currently stable income to become a full time student, and I don't know how that will work out with my active A (who "fell asleep" yesterday and didn't pick the girls up from school, or me from work. I thought he was dead or in jail. Thank god the aftercare progam had the kids). I never know when things will be stable and when they will totally suck. I feel like if I start the nursing program, I have to depend on the AH, but we all know that is not a realistic expectation. But hey, it's better to have some options!

CONGRADULATIONS!!!!! It is so hard to stay in today when we have to look at the big picture. But maybe you can just be happy and proud of yourself just for today and figure it out tomarrow. I think getting in is something to be really proud of!
YAHOOO! GO YOU! GO GIRL GO! Now, about the second part: No it doesn't sound weird, bad or stupid at all. It sounds like you're being honest with yourself. You're absolutely right: nursing programs that are pre professional are 1) expensive financially: I believe that the university has set aside a specific beaureau of financial aid officers specifically for the college of nursing because of the cost of books, tools (such as medical instruments, lab kits, and instruments), lab costs, classes, and continuing education classes. Right there that says that this is a huge commitment, at least from the students I know. At the university here, they also do cuts after the first year: if the student dips below a specific GPA and the professors evalutating feel that they "cant cut it professionally" *snaps* I hope you have a secondary profession that you were interested in. I also know that the college grades on a harder scale--7 points vs the university's standard 10. That says 2) this is a huge commitment time wise. Labs that are attached to classes are generally speaking 1 credit on their own, depending how often they meet; that means that your organic chemistry class (4 credits) will have a lab that meets 2 times a week (2 credits). Then there's your anatomy (4 credits) that will have a lab (1 credit). Right there is 11 credits! Ouch! Now, I hope this doesn't sound like I'm being a real downer on your party. I'm really glad you got in. But I also wanted you to know that you're right to be giving this serious thought before you jumped in. Keep us posted, and DO IT FOR YOU! Don't sell yourself short. You're a bright kid and you can do ANYTHING you want.
Congratulations! Nursing is a wonderful career that can be flexible and creative and pretty good $. Your AH is going to stand on your last nerve through this. I had an ABF when I was in Nursng school and he was very jealous and put me down a lot but I got through. Now he is ancient history. Keep your eyes on your goal for you and your kids-- and who knows- he might decide to join the ride too. best wishes jeanne

Congrats!!!!! this is something to be very proud of. Take time to bask in it. I am an RN and went to school with 3 young children and an AH. I found that the help of many people in my church is what helped me through the program. You might want to consider a group of people who are close to you who can realistically help you. Another thing to consider is where you live, Nursing is moving closer to requiring a BSN for entry level. This varys from state to state. That is not in effect as yet but heading that way. So if you are considering this you may not want to wait too much longer. The college can give you more info on this. Another thing to consider is the salary--it is excellent pay and great, great benefits. It taught my children to work together as a family and that working for things we want are worth it. All 3 of my adult kids have good work ethics. It's an honorable profession and you should be proud to be accepted. Let us know what you decide.
Good for you! I just want to encourage youo to go for it if it is your heart. I work in a hospital and in terms of hours, money, and demand it is a good field to go into. Don't give into fear. Two years will fly by. Yay!
Blessings,
Lou

Congradulations, I am also in the same situation, I have nursing applications sitting on my desk, and I'm scared to fill them in...lol Why, well I'm not good enough, I wont get in...bla bla bla...
In my case I have been a community carer fro 10 years, I have a huge range of experience. I have spoken to lots of people about this. Including the community nurses. So I am asking my HP, to give me the guidence. I know I can do this. I am clever, and more than capable. I have no dependents, I am single, I have no reason to stop me, and I'm still scared...lol
But I am 36, and I know I need to do something for my future, and I am going to try this.
Hey maybe we can go through this together....lol
Wishing you well whatever you decide..Remember, you only get one life, Kids wont always be small....Get YOUR life into order for you...
Hi everyone, thanks alot for making me feel like you are all here with me. I actually haven't told anyone else because I'm so used to setting myself up for failure. I think the first thing I should do is (try to) plan out how this will work financially. I've already been in contact with an organization that offers grants, so I just have to turn in the paperwork. I think I will seek out MULTIPLE GRANTS becasue I really am not interested in any more loans. If it doesn't work out, then oh well, at least I tried. Jamie

Excellent!! Start on the positive side and see what your HP has in store. I also sought out woman's groups for help. You may also want to check out the SBA for woman. While the SBA (small business association) does not give $ to individuals for schooling they are associated with many womans organization who do. Church groups also helped me with $. Keep your eyes looking up and keep your feet moving forward. GO Girl!!!
You are going to love it! The time is going to pass whether you decide to participate in the program or not, so why not go for it? Nurses are special people. You will have a lot of doors opened to the future and your kids can go to campus with you. I'm a newbie here, so I may not be giving the proper amount of encouragement without advice, but the encouragement is sure there. Congratulations!
