alcoholic tendencies

I am afraid that I may have alcoholic tendencies even though I don't drink. I think of Coca Cola as my alcohol........

* I can't stop drinking it.
*I drink can after can or glass after glass.
     *all the time
     *especially when I am mad
* I killed two bottles of 2-liter bottles in two days.
* I use it to drown emotions (drink nonstop until i no longer feel the current emotion - mad, sad, etc)
*I feel as if I don't know how to stop drinking it.
*I'm scared that if I end up quit drinking it I will just replace it with something else (a different drink) instead.

Ever feel this way? Am I right - do I have alcoholic tendencies?

ESH needed please.

Well, Lanchas, I hesitate to think you necessarily have alcoholic tendencies.  You probably are hooked on the caffeine.  Caffeine withdrawal causes headache and edginess, much as nicotine withdrawal.  Try cutting back by looking at the clock.  Wait just a few minutes more before having another coke.   Drink as much water as you can.  DO not expect to kick the caffeine habit overnight, but hang in there.  You can lick this.

Good luck,

Diva

Well, who knows?

If this is causing a problem in your life, then it probalby wouldn't hurt to use program tools to work through it - that is, fight the physical addiction, and look deep inside to see what lack you are trying to fill, and find a healthier alternative.

If nothing else, you can use the insight you get from this struggle in your life to have a bit of understanding about how hard it is for the A to kick the habit.

After dieting for three months I can tell you that you are addicted to sugar and the lesser of the evils is the caffiene. It will take you about four days to withdrawl. I know what withdrawls from chemical dependancy and sugar withdrawls can both be like and there is NO comparison. They both are not fun. With soda withdrawl you may feel groggy and possibly jittery. I was a heavy mountain dew drinker. I'm talking about a two liter a day. I now drink diet mountain dew and can no longer taste the difference and I would have said you were crazy if you would have told me I would be drinking diet.
Alcohol or chemical dependancy is 100 times worse. Be lucky it is not that. Good luck. It goes away pretty quicky. :)

This statement really touched me - not because I have an addiction to Cola, or Dr.Pepper or Unsweeten Tea (which happen to be my drinks of choice), but because prior to recovery - I used many different "outside" things to stuff the emotions and fill the hole in my soul.

I don't know if this is what you are going thru - or if it is just a thing that you really, really like to drink Coca Cola.

For me personally, I had to find a healthier way to process my feelings - especially the feelings of sadness, feeling less than, not good enough and worthlessness. Shopping, eating, or compulsive cleaning use to be my "fixers".

Of course, I still love to shop, eat and like to keep my home very tidy. But what I am learning is balance is the key to my serenity. If I'm a feeling unhappy about myself, sad, or in a state of fear - I need to feel those feelings, process, journal, talk to a recovery friend and most importantly ask my HP to help heal through this process. I can't go back to old behaviors - using outside things to fix inside feelings.

So this may be way off on what you're going thru and if it is - "take what you like & leave the rest"

Wishing you peace,
Rita
