The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
I am wanting to do some more studying and reading, and was hoping that you all could give me suggestions on books that you have found especially powerful in your journey.
I have had 'How Alanon Works' and 'Courage to Change' for years, and both are excellent. I would just like to add to them.
I am thinking of buying 'Getting them Sober' for one, and any other recommendations would be gratefully appreicated.
I am an avid reader. I love getting them sober. I am hard pressed to be able to name Alanon conference approved literature I can recommend but let me think on it a bit and I will get back to you if anything comes to mind.

Two things: 1. Recovery is a process, not an event.....and.... 2. You only get to go around once. Leave em laughing and make it worth your while
I have found two books that stick in my mind and help me so much. One is A million little peices by James Frey (Oprah book club) There was a bunch of hype that he made some of the stuff up but in general it really gets you in the head of an addict and it taught me things that I had NO idea about. I wanted to know the battles that my ahsober was fighting and this book put it all into perspective and it really put me in the head of an alcoholic. The other is called Measure of a Man by Sidney Pointier (also Oprah book club) This book was more for me. It taught me how to feel for myself and it taught me about MY world and it helps me lead my children in a peaceful, down to earth manner, a place that they can be proud of. The book was just peaceful and so well written. If you do read one of these books I would be more then happy to pm each other and talk about them. I hope you find the book that makes a positive change in your life.
You might want to check out "Path to Recovery" it is CAL. It helped me to understand the steps a bit better. Members share their experience with each step and then it is followed up with questions, which helped me relate the steps to my circumstances. Happy reading!
One of my favouriste CAL books is "In all our Affairs: Making Crisis Work for you". If you grew up around alcoholism, "From Survival to Recovery" is a great book.
The primer for me was and still is One Day at a Time in Al-Anon or ODAT and the other more recent is Hope for Today both are conferenced approved. If you're looking for deep understanding of the disease.."Under the Influence" is considered hands down the most informative and helpful. It was one of my college course work books.
You got some good input on some great Alanon literature. I read A Million Little Pieces too, and you know, all the stuff said about him making some of it up, I just looked beyond that. It is a good book anyway...very enlightening on how "they" feel. I am also a big fan of the "Getting Them Sober" books....there are 4 volumes actually. I have read mine to death! Good for you for reading and finding ways to help yourself! Love in Recovery, Becky1
I lOOOVE the Getting Them Sober Books by Toby Rice Drews. She also has great book excerpts and tips of the month on her website Gettingthemsober.com. If you can't afford a book she will send you a free book and video from her vol 1 series. You can get the info from her BB. The al-anon literature is great my favorite is HOW AL-anon Works. This is my favorite because it explains HOW to detach and HOW to do things.
I read 'A Million Little Pieces' a couple of years ago and thought it was really good. I was actually kind of sad for James Frey that there was the controversy about the book because I think it weakened the message, which I thougth was a good one.
Yesterday I ordered: - Paths to Recovery - Getting The Sober - the pamphlet on Detachment
I have 'CoDependent No More' and haven't looked at it in years, so thanks for the reminder on that one also.
The supoort and caring here is phenomenal....
we can accomplish together what we could never accomplish alone...
