The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
Does anyone know the reality/rules in al anon around whether in order to provide service at the district level or higher that a loss of anonimity is part of the deal? How does anonimity and acting in service as a group rep or district rep or higher in the state -- what's been your experience in how that works? emma
Loosing anonimity with in the program ?? Since dist reps only represent existing groups it should not be a problem . Public Outreach often takes u out in public places there of course anonymity is a choice . Again if you go into Delegate position it is still within the fellowship. no outside influence. Hope this helps.
As I understand it emma even at the district/state/nat'l levels, anonymoty is still a clearly held value. It is still held that only I can break my anon. and that I am called to when I may be of service to some one in distress because of the family disease of alcholism. I think where you are getting confused--I know I was--was because of the commercials for al anon and aa. I didn't understand how, in keeping with traditions 11 and 12, we could safely broadcast these television commercials. I was told that 1) there is no ones anon. that is SPECIFICALLY broken; this means that my anon nor yours is broken. 2) while we are an organization of attraction not promotion, our commercials are under the jurisdition of Public service announcements, which means that they cannot be entertainment in value but of educational in value. It also means that the commercial cannot be longer than 60 seconds (correct me if I am wrong, fellow MIP AFGs?) and MUST (I am fairly certain of this fact) have contact information reguarding the message we convey; for example, at the end of every commercial, we would show the 1-800 numbers for AA and Al Anon, and the local numbers for AA and Al anon I think PATHWAYS TO RECOVERY would be helpful here if you are still confused about anon. and the Al Anon/Alateen service manual would also be helpful to help you get clear ideas about the higherarchies of service and the procedures observed there. I hope this helps.
In my district, anonymity is preserved at meetings. You are only asked for your first name, last initial in district and assembly meetings.
I'm the Public Outreach cooridanator for my district. I'm new without a clue but there is much free literature available on the WSO's website. Check out the media kit there, (ie. http://al-anon.org/pdf/mediakit/mkanonymity.pdf ) There are also many free pamphlets. I think attraction and cooperation is free on their somewhere.
Also, check the Service Manual. p73 is one reference. "It is, however, important to make Al-Anon known through our public information work with professionals who come into contact with families still suffering from the effects of alcoholism. Such contacts, of course, make it necessary for the Al-Anon and Alateen members involved to give their full names. Al-Anon members also give their full names to interested doctors, spiritual leaders, school or industrial personnel."
If you are to work w/ the press, they may need your information to contact you. All you can do is tell them not to mention your full name in the media and hope for the best. There is even a reading in "In All Our Affairs" where someone was mortified that it was given out but her group understood that she did the leg work and it fell under 'accepting the things you can not change' and step 1. :)
If you need a link for the service manual. PM me.
