I went to an open AA meeting last night, as could not find any Alanon meetings on Sat. night. Had to drive 25 miles each way just to get to this open AA meeting! The man who gave the lead read a letter something likethis.....and passed out copies. I don't know where it came from, as he didn't say, but I have changed the wording a little bit to make it apply better to Alanoners. Here goes. I apologize to whoever wrote the original, but as I read it, I just wished it could apply to those of us who care about the A's in our lives. When I get time later I will type in the original, which is geared more to the A's. Love in Recovery, Becky1
Hello, just in case you forgot me, I am your loved one's Disease. I hate meetings, I hate Higher Powers, and I hate your program. To all who come in contact with me, I wish you suffering and death. Allow me to introduce myself...I am the disease of addiction. I am cunning, I am baffling, and I am powerful. I have killed millions and I am pleased. I would like nothing better than to kill your husband, your wife, your children, your parents, your lover, your friends, and yes, even YOU! I love to make you hurt. I love to make you cry. I love to take your serenity away and make you scream and curse, and threaten. When I get you hand over your self-worth to someone else, it makes it much easier for me to take you both down in one sweep. I love your confusion and anger. I feed on your misery, I savor your tears. I laugh at your despair. It only makes me stronger. I gain my best motivation when I can make you sick, weak and tired. I can paralyze you with words spewed in hate from the lips of the person you care most about. I rejoice whenever another home is broken or another life is taken! I love to see husbands, wives, children, parents, and friends separated and torn from each other. I dance with glee around the grave that you weep beside. All I ask of you is long term suffering. I can destroy all good things in your life. People don't take me seriously. They take strokes, heart attacks, and even diabetes seriously. Fools, without my help these things would not be possible. I am such a hated disease, and yet I do not come uninvited. So many have chosen me over reality and peace. More than you hate me, I hate all of you who have a twelve step program. Your program, your meetings, and your Higher Power, all of these weaken me, and I cannot function in the manner I am accustomed to. Now, I must lay here quietly. For those of you in that silly program called "recovery", you may not see me, but I am growing bigger than ever. For those of you not in a program, you are already mine. You just don't realize it yet. And so is that person you once held so dear to your heart. They aren't yours, anymore. They belong to me. I am watching for you to slip, so I can tighten my hold on that person you love. I am waiting patiently. Unlike you, I have all the time in the world. Until we meet again, I wish you and all those you love, loneliness, isolation, suffering and death. Sincerely, Addiction
I agree, HP IS stronger than the Disease. The Disease is just in denial that it is the stronger of the two. But, guess what??? It is w-r-o-n-g! Love in Recovery, Becky1
YIKES Becky! I take this writing in a whole different way. It reminds me of the inscription over the gates of hell in Dante's Divine Comedy..."Abandon hope, all ye who enter here."

Diva----THAT is why we must be ever vigilant in our recovery.. And there IS HOPE, but we are dealing with a very dangerous, cunning, baffling disease. That is why a program is so important, it WEAKENS the disease. It cannot function. That is why the disease hates programs, Higher Powers, and meetings. Thru these, there is always hope. As promised, I will post the AA version later today. Love in Recovery, Becky1
Becky, I'm almost speechless - It reminds of a Speaker I heard at an Al-Anon Convention a few years ago that said "the disease is always calling me back into my insanity"
I agree that it reminds me that I must stay focused on MY recovery in order to live Happy, Joyous and Free; In order to give my loved ones the chance to live that same way.
Thanks, Rita
