i placed a call to my husband a few minutes ago, ''uuuh, there is no easy way to tell you this , your mother just died.'' ''when? last night?'' he asked. ''no, just a few minutes ago,'' i replied. his mother was over eighty years old. it was her time, she was ready. but, you see, she always claimed to be his sister. she had this child [my hysband] out of wedlock, in a day when it wasn't acceptable, in a small town where everybody knew and pretended they didn't. the affair was a town scandel that goes on to this day. he was a married, prominant man in the canadian service, with children of his own. she worked at the local legion. and, a child was born. fortunatley for this child, his grandmother raised him as her own, she already had twelve kids, add one more, a bakers dozen. my husband loved the woman he called mom. but, he grew up with the whispers..........., in schools, the churches, medical offices, everywhere. and, next week there will be more whispers, because this lady did eventually marry and have five more children, they think my husband is their uncle, they don't know [for sure] he is their older brother. i think some of them, or at least one of them does know. my daughters are her grandchildren, they call her Aunty Betty. when my girls were old enough we talked about the truth. my daughters know, and, like a good co-dependant, dysfunctional family........, they have learned to keep the secret. now, i have to go tell my girls, aunty betty has just died.
again............,
God, grant me the serenty to accept the things i cannot change, the courage to change the things i can, and, the WISOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.
It started in a Legion Hall..... not that there was any alcoholism there but there was alcohol.
Not that there was alcohol involved or the disease. But for me this is a sad reminder of just how many lifes can be affected this by this disease. I can also see how a program of recovery (be it ours or another fellowship) could help someone like your husband deal with such things whirling around in his mind and around them.
I'm grateful I have this program where I can try to work through the effects of many dysfunctions in my life. I'm grateful to be part of a fellowship where you could come and share this with us as well.

(((((((jewelry))))))) these family secrets!!! there've been some in my family, too. My half-uncle's son was told that his dad was dead - he wasn't!! When he really did die, someone in the famiily who was supposed to keep it a secret - didn't, invited the son to the funeral - and the innocent son really got hurt.
When I first went to Alanon, I was told the cycle of dysfunction could be broken. I love Alanon and it saved my life, but I still don't see how the pattern gets broken when in my family, it goes on and on and on.
I'm so sorry for your family's pain. God bless your husband's grandmother for taking care of him. It's too bad that everything was such a shame way back then that these family "secrets" had to be concocted.
My deepest sympathies to you and your family. Some things are better left unsaid. I am reminded that people do the best they can at any given moment in time. They did what they had to do to make their lives. May Aunt Betty rest in peace.
Love and blessings to you and your family.

Lots and lots of hugs and love to you and your family Jewely.
I agree with Karilynn. We are all human ... we do the best we can under all the circumstances. If others around town care to give this situation so much power that is sad. You and your family do not need to do that. It does not matter what others think or say ... what matters is the celebration of a life.
Honor the good memories and love and honor each other during this stressful time. I hope and pray you and your husband hold your heads up high and walk proud ... honoring Betty's life.
