Something that really helped me put things in perspective this past week was to write down the Serenity Prayer like this.......................
God, Grant me the SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CAN NOT CHANGE.......
That Garry is an alcoholic. That I can not make him STOP DRINKING.
That Garry does not put me first in his life, our marriage, etc. That I can not make him put me forst no matter how much I complain, etc. he is an ancoholic.
That I am an adult child of a family of Alcoholics and that all the wishing in the world will not make that go away or make my family NOT DYSFUNCTIONAL...............
and so on and so on............................
God, Grant me to COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN................
AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE..........
I found by making my list this way and really seeing in front of me that it helped me come to a place of peace in myself. My list is REALLY REALLY LONG! Especially the things I can not change! I can be a control freak! Hopefully this can help some of the newbies and some of us oldies too! I came to thinking of this list thing one night after praying and praying for answers and finally TURNING EVERYTHING OVER to my HIGHER POWER. I was at the point where I could no longer DO IT MYSELF! Took the first step once again. Deb
Yep, our list of what we can't change can be pretty long. Where's your list of what you can change??
Now that is a list that is really empowering. We can be so stuck in all the crap that we can't change we can forget to live, make the most of our day and change those things that we actually have the ablity to change.
For me today..."the courage to change the things I can"
My attitude -- hehehe the mound of paper work that sits there intimidating me my perspective my boundries the state of disaster my kitchen is in and so importantly, the courage to share this program with someone else
Someone once said the Serenity Prayer this way, it made me laugh, it has some truth
God grant me the serenity to accept that I can't change my A The courage to change the only thing that I can And the wisdom to know that it's me.
