Hello, I have not been here before I have been to the chat a number of times in the last 3 months. I am not really sure what the format is here on the message board, but a little about me...
I am a mom to 3 chidlren, andmy husband is an alcohalic. That was the hardest thing for me to accept, because my mom is a recovering alcohalic and I never wanted to marry into the situation again. However i don't remember dh drinking 10 years ago like he has in the last 2 years.
i have been trying to bargain the reasons, for this.. and finally in January,, I realized it is not me:) it is the alcohal.
I would like to learn more about my own recovery and how to work the program. Going to a f2f meeting isn't feasable for me because of the location and times.
Thank you for the support many of you have offered.
((slpmom)) (()) = hugs and a great big one for you and welcome to MiP.
i want to congradulate you on your first miracle of many more to come... that is, getting here and being a part of the al anon program. most all of us here share a similar story on how alcohol has affected our lives. i say affected instead of ruined because, at least for me, it is not true. my miracles include finding understanding, enlightenment, and tools to work through all the bad stuff... ie. resentment, anger, loss of ______ insert your own word -- mine is, nerely everything... including sanity. this program has offered me the ability, through a lot of pain and hard work, to better myself, to better my life, to become happy.
alcoholism is a horrible disease. the people who are alcoholics are sick. the people that are affected by alcoholism are sick, also -- sometimes even moreso. as a lot of the literature says, alcoholism is a PROGRESSIVE, FATAL disease. it will kill. my beloved wife will likely die from it, as she is in denial. it has killed our relationship and our home/family. it led me into a place of depression and insanity that, at one time, i thought i would not recover.
then i found program (al anon). it has given me so much hope and serenity that i am humbled by the thoughts that led me here. working the steps were a guiding light. i strongly encourage you to read as much as possible about alcoholism in general and about coping with alcoholics in our lives. it is through working the program that we can get the strength, courage, and knowledge to stop the cycle - as it is indeed a family disease. there are all kinds of scary statistics out there on children of alcoholics and the likelihood of them being affected, in one way or another, throughout their lives.
first, though, i want to pass along what one of my brothers and sisters here gave to me when i first came here.
i didn't cause it. i can't cure it. i can't control it.
i am powerless over alcohol, alcoholism, and any other person (in general) whose behavior i'd try or like to control.
there is lots and lots of ESH here (that is, Experience, Strength, and Hope). please, keep coming back - it really does work IF you work it. face to face meetings are also a huge part of my recovery -- it is that experience mixed with reading and journaling and coming to this website that have led me to a much happier existance.
take time out and take care of yourself. self-care is something most of us have put on the back burner.
keep posting, honey, ask questions, read others' posts, reply, share your experiences... keep doing the things that you find serenity and satisfaction.
with love cj

I grew up in an Afamily too, except my father is still drinking. It took me years to realise that this is a family disease. Everyone in its midst is somehow affected.
I chose anA partner too, as so many children of As do.
I am now on the rocky road to recovery. There are many people here who understand and care and will support you on your journey of learning and recovering.
Keep coming back and sharing whats happening to you.
