Just finished a couple of months of really good therapy with an addiction and stress management expert after breaking up with a wonderful woman who was battling cancer. My sister and her daughters both began addiction and suicide issues during my gf's recovery after her first bout of cancer.
My therapist helped me understand why it was not a coincidence that everytime I have been either really happy or dealing with a real crisis like bad health, my sister's family would suddenly become needy and slip back into their chaos- it's because I was focusing on MY life and not theirs.
Ever since my divorce four years ago I have been bombarded every few months with phone calls from my sister or her daughters about how each of them are battling addiction or suicide attempts.
So I made the choice to detach from them and focusing on my own life.
Isn't it amazing whow we can live with these patterns our whole lives, and never see them, until someone points it out? Once you know what is going on, it's so much easier to know what to do about it. Welcome.
