I spent a whole lot of time complaining about my A so now that his first year of sobriety is approaching I think he deserves some Kudos.
Firstly, making it for a year is huge. That in itself makes me beam with pride. That good looking sober guy is my husband! *beams* He's accomplished so much this year, more then I could have ever dreamed. While he made a very tough decision to go to Alaska 6 mo. ago and work, it has been a wonderful and blessed choice for him. His job of 18 yrs was contract manager for a worldwide construction company, He is now working for one of the top 3 oil companies. It was a whole different realm of work and completely foreign. One man he had worked with before and stayed in contact with (from the old job) knew what he was capable of and encouraged him to take the Alaska job opportunity.
My A knew that after his stint in the hospital and 4 mo. recovery at home that his mind just wasn't the same but improving. He took the job (on a wing and a prayer) hoping that his mental status would return 100%. I can only imagine what kind of guts that must have taken to move so far away from his support system, not knowing the job or if he could pull it off, plus learn the oil business. He was definately on a mission of recovery, self improvement, and amends to his loved ones.
In just 6 months, he has doubled our income, he was offered the opportunity to take classes in a particular software that the company offered to pay for and passed that with flying colors. He's now going to begin business classes that pertain to the oil business contracts. These are college credit classes. He recently has been moved to a very important project that I'm not able to disclose because it is still in the proposal stages. Fact is, they believe in him nd his "smarts" too.
I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be able to go to Alaska and watch a whale roll around in the water. Or see those majestic mountains within feet from moose, bear and eagles. Without the fortitude it took for him to do what he is doing I woul've never seen these gifts of nature.
My hubby never attended AA, he has done all that has taken place, (and so much more that I haven't written) on his own, finding his own path of recovery through an awesome determination and belief in his HP. From deaths door to here, he truly is a miracle.
love Christy

Recovery IS possible - there is hope in the darkness. And, you are right, there is more than one way to get there. What is needed is a real commitment to changing, not just the drinking, but the mind set behind it.
Absolutely amazing! It has been such a wonderful blessing to be along for the ride with you this past year. I remember when your hubby came home from hospital and the way things were, and to look at where you both are now and what you have accomplished in one year!! Fantastic!
Kudos to your hubby, and Kudos to you my friend.
Thank you for sharing your story of hope and love with us!

that is truly progress for an "Alanonic". recognizing the true dedication of someone doing there best to be true to themselves, in turn back to you. finally, a "cycle" that can repeat to infinite and beyond, with love, courage, and respect being the center, instead of addiction. i'm proud of you. i'm proud of your hub, too.

But through your postings of his recovery and yours, you gave me hope for my recovery as well as hubby's. In the depths of my despair you gave my hope and encouragement.

Thanks Christy! What an inspiring and hope-filled post! There truly are miracles that do happen in the midst of this awful disease! And God does answer our prayers in His time. I too remember when your husband was very ill, and the many trying times you faced. During that time, I kept you and your family in my prayers. You have been such a great support to everyone here in Alanon.....thanks for your encouragement. May God continue to abundantly bless you and your family!
Love, mel123 P.S. This is my son's favorite quote..."Though no man can go back and make a brand new start, any man can start from now and make a brand new end."
Thank you all so much for the kind words. Every one of you has had part in our recovery. As stated, many recall how sick my A was when he got out of the hospital. Life was awful scary, not knowing if he would regain his mental capacity, ever work again, have to be cared for forever. Thank God for you guys then!! Looking back, the whole ordeal reminds me of the Footprints poem, only it was you people that carried me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
love Christy

Thanks for the share. I think too often we forget to post about the good things our A's have accomplished. Maybe we need to do more of this so other's can see all is not lost, that there is hope. That things can change with determination, hardwork and a Higher Power. And that couples can make it, that a relationship that was dead or near death can be brought back to life.
I am so happy for all you and your hubby have found...and are still yet to find.
