My A husband left me 7 months ago, and I have been suffering ever since. I still love him, but hate his behavior even tho he has been sober for 26 years, he has been a mean bastard because of being a dry drunk. He just started going to meetings the last 2 years. I just want to change, grow, heal and be the very best person I can possibly be. I am just starting to realize the profound impact alcoholism had on me. Looking back on it, I can see what a monster it was and how it got me in its clutches even tho I rarely drank. It ruined my life, but maybe I can put some of the pieces back together and God will use plan B to make my life worthwhile and happy. I have to turn everything over to him, and maybe living my life by the 12 steps will make me understand life better than if I married someone who had no addictions. I spent the last 32 years of my life trying to control my alcoholic and the situations that surrounded the craziness.
I tried to tell my husband's sister the other night my side of the story of how life was, and she said that she has listened to him tell the same story but with a different twist from his perception. I realized after going to an alanon meeting the next night, that she could never possibly understand what it is like living with an A. How could she possibly understand the crazymaking when she has a stable, kind, normal husband who supports and loves her unconditionally. The only people who understand what my life was like are people like you on this board. You guys understand how angry you get at the A, and how you just want to lash out at them the next day for ruining an event or social situation and being the ass that they are. I feel like you people are the only ones who understand and I will be ever eternally grateful to you for listening.
I do understand and so does everyone else on this board. You are right people on the "outside" will never understand what it is to live with an A. That is why we are such a tight group here.
Hang in there Snoopy, stay strong. You will find comfort and peace here.
Heard this story the other day, from the wife of an A talking to someone outside the program: "Well, just tell him it has to stop or you will leave him, that will make him stop." Yeah, riiiiiiight.....

Promise??? I believe most people think that if the A is not drinking, that they are no longer a problem A. Not so, mine was sober 26 years but had a bad case of only putting the cork in the bottle. He was and is a mean bastard and people don't get this as he no longer drinks. Do you think I am crazy? Is what I'm saying true? Are there cases where there is sobriety and even going to meetings, but still a mean bastard? Is it me? Do you think that he will regret leaving me after awhile? Help--I'm in a funky, scary, panicky mood now. Please, someone respond.
