The writer says that it is easy to become enmeshed with alcoholics and their self-destructive behavior. We can lose sight of the idea that we can be happy if they are depressed, and we can be serene when they are drinking. The writer hit a turning point when someone said we have to learn to make it whether the alcoholics do or do not. From that day on, the writer felt they had their own life and their own destiny. We can separate our life from theirs, and build a wonderful life for ourselves.

This reading is part of my story because for about 15 years or so, I was completely enmeshed with my A, tried to control a road to sobriety, and was an emotional and unhappy mess. Now that I have a number of years in program, I no longer focus on my A, nor allow the dysfunction of addiction control me the way it used to. My spouse says that alanon has "ruined" me, because I've got the focus on me rather than on my A. It's a huge change for both of us, but one that I can enjoy and be grateful for. :)

I get the same thing from my 'A' as well as far as his description of me since I've joined Al-Anon,
but because he can no longer control me with his chaos he views me as unloving and unappreciative!!!
His view point is an attempt to control me as well, but for me Al-Anon has been and will always be a
very important part of my life going forward that will never ever change.
