C2C for Friday, June 16, 2023 – Detaching With Love

The author of this day's reading talks about the need to detach with love which not only benefits the
individual living with an alcoholic but allows the alcoholic to learn the successes and consequences of
their actions without any interference. It is important to detach with love in order to have a healthy
supportive relationship and maintain dignity for everyone by doing so.
Todays reminder: "I am learning the difference between help and interference." "Today I will
examine the way I offer support."
Todays Quote: "Detachment did not mean disinterest; I considered detachment 'respect for another's
personhood.'" ~ Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism
Detachment "with love" took me a long time to master because there were so many bruises to my ego over
a span of ten years. It took me a long time to set aside those hurts in order to love and support while detaching.
I wanted to detach from the alcoholic when I needed to detach from the disease. Al-Anon helped me to find my
healthy perspective again so that I could heal, then I was able to fully grasp how to detach with love.
Did old hurts cause you to have the same difficulties with learning how to detach with love?

Thanks Debbie for your service and share. It took me years to learn to detach with love as well. I do love my A and ask God to give me compassion everyday. But I feel with my detachment with love, which seems to be a permanent way of life, I don't have the feelings I used to have. My A lies, sneaks, is very moody, and at the same time the relationship provides me with 31 years with the same person who does love me and tries to help me. We had a talk last week about the lack of motivation for help. I couldn't live this life without help. My A has no desire for help. That's what saddens me. Actually it's a tragedy. Live and let live. ODAT.

Thank you for your ESH {{Lyne}}, I just got in from doing all the line trimming on a
pretty steep bank outside and was thinking what the neighbors think seeing me out
there doing something that the 'A' in my life should be helping with. There is no
motivation from this person to do anything but sit on the mower once a week, which
is actually the next door neighbors mower!! Yes, ODAT.

Happy Friday. Thank you Debbie and Lyne for your honest shares. Sometimes I become so absorbed in my own problems I forget that others suffer too. The point that it took a span of ten years to master detachment provided relief and hope. I'll stop calling myself Daft-O-Dills (lol). It sure is painful to watch a loved one resist help for their physical and mental well-being. Several times today I had to repeat " when you're wrong, admit it and when you're right, be quiet". Looking forward to an annual festival in Little Italy tomorrow...so glad I enjoy my own company. Thanks for your service and reminders. :)
