Recently I had to be in the presence of my exH for an extended period of time as part of a legal proceeding. This was the first time I've been that close to him, for that long, in 2 years.
I know he has been under strict court ordered alcohol monitoring for almost a year and thus is as dry as he has been in almost two decades. I was so curious to see how his mental / cognitive state would be.
I discovered that he has brain damage. I suspected it before I left him, but now it's clear as day. All that is left in his head are thoughts of how he has been victimized. He is exactly like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. He is not entirely cognizant of all the laws he has broken, or all the punishments that have been meted out to him (and that he has managed to ignore).

I remember being told that alcoholism is a fatal disease. I remember thinking that the teller was "overly dramatic".
Now I can see it in front of me. It IS a fatal disease if left unchecked.

Fedora, it's really sad that people choose behaviors that destroy them. Denial is such a treacherous situation. And with all the info and treatment available, some just carry on self-destruction. Bless them, change me.

I can easily remember the exact moment when I realized that my Ex had severe brain damage due to his alcohol abuse. Then about a week later, his sister told me in conversation that she believed this as well. It was a shock, b/c society "raised" me with the idea that drugs are bad, drugs are killers - yet alcohol was readily available. However, my Ex was almost himself after rehab for meth. He has never recovered from the alcohol abuse, despite 3 long rehab stays. I try not to think about it too hard anymore. He was a kind and incredibly funny man, with a ready smile. Note the past-tense. Just another thing we survivors have to work through,
