In today's reading, the author reflects on steps 8 and 9. They remember hearing another member say that when they made a list of people they had harmed, they put themselves at the top of the list. It hadn't occurred to the author to think of the harm they had caused themselves. The author had gotten the message that it was wrong to think of themselves first, and so they put the needs of everyone else first and neglected themselves. Since they weren't caring for themselves, the author became a burden to those around them. The author concludes with reflecting that the only action available to them is to improve themselves - they now take responsibility for themself, and this in turn makes the world a better place.
Todays Reminder: Being true to myself is one of the greatest gifts I can give to those around me. Perhaps I will inspire them to do the same; perhaps not. Why should others bother to follow my example if I cant take care of my own affairs? To give advice to others is to intrude; to give advice to myself is to grow.
Today's Quote: Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in ones own sunshine. Ralph Waldo Emerson

I like the quote for today. Am I standing in my own sunshine and creating my own shadows? I think I must be. I've been working with my therapist a lot lately on imposter syndrome, and my generally low opinion of myself. I know I have a long way to go on this front, and I know I've come a long way thanks to the work I've done through Al-Anon. I absolutely love the progress I see in my own self-talk and use of slogans. They get me through really hard times and a lot of self-doubt. today's reading, and especially today's quote, make me wonder if I'm the one standing in my own way, if I'm letting myself be driven by fear in some aspects of my life. I've been working my program more intentionally and attending meetings more regularly, and I feel like this new understanding of how I'm creating shadows for myself is a good outcome because of my increased attention to my program. I'm also confident that by continuing to work my program, I am going to see continued improvement, and I may even stop creating my own shadows and step into the sunshine.
I hope you make today a great day!

Good Afternoon Skorpi. Thank you for your service and a wonderful share. Your example increases my desire to do more work on myself so my true spirit can shine. In addition to your points, I liked "To give advice to others is to intrude. To give advice to myself is to grow ". Grateful for your wisdom. Have a great day.

Thank you Skorpi for your service and to you, Daffodils and TT for all your shared ESH.
The point that, when I do not take care of me, that I can become a burden really stood out for me!
I can see how that was the case and am so grateful to this program and MIP for helping me see it!!
