let the hand of Alanon and Alateen always be there...
...and let it begin with me.
In the beginning I learned that we empower the person and that don't enable the disease.
This shifted for me- to empowering myself. With the power-less-ness and the higher power in the programme.
I learned that I was compassionate- and had been from a young age. But I forgot to be compassionate to myself.
When I began to do this I called it empathy. It gave me a base.
So today I try to demonstrate the power and peace of the programme.

David, thank you for reminding me!!
When I did some background reading, that declaration was adopted 35 years ago!!
I really do believe that if I want a better life, it has to "begin with me"!

Debb.
Boundaries always baffled me. I do know what boundaries are expected to achieve!
I felt that our rituals of encounter play a big part in creating healthy boundaries.
First impressions.

I never had experience being compassionate to myself. Self care is really foreign for me

Such a wonderful thread....
I always thought of the let it begin with me was a suggestion to look out for others in distress and let the helping start from me to them....
Needless to say, I also had to learn to find compassion and kindness towards myself. Between my childhood and an early career in the arts, I learned to ignore myself, in essence, my feelings and needs didnt matter. Program has changed all that. I want to treat myself the kind way I treat others, and Ive made great progress. Grateful member.

The Alanon Declaration.

let the hand of Alanon and Alateen always be there...
