I have my clients stuff for a week and I felt kind of icky about one of his kids tax returns but I could not put my finger on it because the filing version looked OK and so he comes today and we are chatting about Social security and I said oh yeah you want to pay Social Security because thats your future and I wasnt comfortable about this one kid but I let the guy go out the door with his stuff
I detached and went to the gym thinking I will deal with it later if I am still bugged by it so I get home and I get dinner and I just had to go in and check, this time, I checked the worksheets and 1/2 of my tax calculation was gone. The Social Security part was zip--gone--poof--and I know I entered that crap but it was not on there so therefore the poor little kid owes $3000 more. Which no problem, they have the money but I felt like an idiot because I had to call the client and tell him oops something terrible happened and I cannot explain what happened because I know I entered the stuff but it was not on the worksheet and therefore no Social Security tax liability showed up. I told him it was a good thing he was asking me about Social security and the rules about it because that reinforced that something was wrong with the one kids return and so I checked this time, I checked the worksheets which there were many of them but I looked at every damn one of them and everything was perfect except for that one worksheet regarding Social security. Half of my stuff was gone
would you guys think I was on trustworthy? In competent? I feel like an idiot even though I think it was just some weird ass thing that happened, I still feel like an idiot I am grateful that he and I chatted about Social security and he was asking me about it and that made me even more uncomfortable and suspicious about the boys return so I went in to the guts and sure enough the Social security part of my return just I dont know what happened to it and it was half gone
so I had to call him and tell him--W aIT dont send until I resend an amendment I told him something happened to part of the return in the worksheets and so we didnt get the Social Security calculation which good old cyberspace
anyway do you guys think Im an idiot? I feel like one even though I know I put the stuff in there something happened

Everyone makes mistakes! When we recognize our mistake and take the quickest possible action to correct it -- that's making amends, and that's part of our program. I would say you are a good professional that kept your client informed about the situation. Not everyone would do that.
Here's my silly mistake of the week. I had ordered an appliance online, received it, and was putting it together per the assembly instructions. During this process, I realized I could not find one of the key parts of the appliance -- and I jumped to the conclusion that the seller had forgotten to include it in the package. I immediately fired off messages to customer support at the big online store (you know, the one named for a big river in South America) and to the seller of the product, notifying them of the missing part. I was shocked that they would forget to include the most important part of the appliance. Then I sighed and went back to the kitchen to package up the item in case they wanted me to send it back for a refund.
Then I turned around and looked at the other side of the kitchen counter ... there was the part! I had set it aside while un-boxing everything, and forgot! I had judged everyone else for my mistake! When the very nice customer service rep from the company contacted me the next day, I apologized and explained what happened.
Boy, did I feel silly. But am I an idiot, or just human? I am voting for human.

The good that came out of this situation is that you followed your instincts and checked your work!
You caught the error and corrected it and from all of this you learned from it that, yes like Freetime
said, we are all human!!!

Thank you ladies, I prayed and slept last night OK and I just thought you know like I am human and I did let him know right away when I followed my instincts and did check the worksheets. I am still scratching my head trying to figure out how half my stuff got on and the other half which was the self-employment tax part did not get on because I clearly remember entering it on the worksheet but whatever it didnt show, and when you look at the return without all the guts inside of it, it looked kind of normal but this time I looked at the guts and I saw it right away. Freetime. I had to laugh at what you did with that part, that sounds like me, you set something aside and I can just see you firing off notes and everything to the company. Im glad that the port was there and you were able to get it together
And Debb. Yeah I learned, follow my instincts and oh boy am I glad I did. My HP was nudging me when I let the client walk out the door with the stuff it nagged me, so I dismissed it and went to the gym and detached but the nagging was still there when I came back and so thats when I went and did my investigation. You are so right! It was a big lesson in following my instincts
I just hope I did not lose him out of something like this. I mean this was a big mishap and like I wrote to him when I PDF mailed him the corrected copy in the email I told him I know it sounds like BS but I remember putting that information in there. I remember inputting it. For some reason it just did not work and so moving forward I guess the lesson here is just read the worksheets and the guts of the return that you keep for your records and make sure everything got on there

And you know, Freetime , I didnt think of it as an amend but it was I mean I discovered it and I am mediately called the client and told him that something really bizarre happened and dont mail his sons return until I could get the straightened out. I just hope that I dont lose him over something so weird. But it never entered my mind to try and hide it or ignore it. I was going to find what happened if it took all night
