Love was used to manipulate or control. Love didn't seem like a positive thing, because it had been used to cause harm.
Anger at people who used love to manipulate or control can be a way to break free of harmful relationships. Later, the author could be grateful to those people for helping the author discover what they do not want.
With time, the author discovered a need for love and through experience with people who were able to give love freely and without condition learned how to accep healthy love into their life.

What a nice topic for today! Rediscovering my own definition of love and inviting that into my life was one of the major steps toward becoming a healthier me that i took in my recovery. I spent a lot of time worrying that love was conditional. Learning to open up to love from others and build accepting trusting friendships and relationships is one of the gifts of recovery that i cherish.
If you celebrate Christmas, i hope you have a peaceful and love-filled celebration!

I am grateful for what I have learned about love, as a result of the program and the painful situation that brought me here. My beliefs about love and so many other things have changed for the better.

Thanks Skorpi for your service. I only knew dysfunctional love until program. I had loved and had been loved, though all by addicts. That's all I knew.
Alanon has given me a whole new perspective on a healthier kind of love, including loving myself. Awesome topic! Lyne

Thanks skorpi for your service and the daily....I always look for my part, and while I certainly leaned towards others who were not capable of love and intimacy, I too had some defects in this area. Recovery has given me a much more open mind and heart and I'm learning that how I and others show love can be and usually is very different. When I just trust in a power greater than I, and practice having an open mind and heart, I am amazed daily at what is vs. what I used to want it to be.
We had a large tree die in our backyard...I mourned this tree as it provided tons of much needed shade. Around this tree, we had a variety of perennial plants that were at risk when it was time to have the tree removed. My AH dug most up, put them in pots, and brought them inside as it's winter time here.
I woke up a few days ago, and went to make coffee and found a few roses in a vase in front of the sink. No words, nothing special - just a couple roses. It made me smile as he cuts roses often during season and leaves them for me to enjoy! Knowing I'm in pain and mourning, the nurturing of a plant during the winter, indoors for a completely different reason, allowed my AH to bring unexpected beauty to me.
I keep my life, outlook, expectations and days simple and I am amazed at what is! (((Hugs)))

I keep thinking "four letter words". Love, hate, fear, rage, hope...
and the word "rose" in your share IAm. A true easter word.
Christmas coincides with high summer here... which make the dark days of winter seem even darker... Living around orchards means that Christmas and summer is also our peak harvest season. This season I have had a 10 day flu- and the cold wet summer has not helped... but I kept quiet about this... and have just gotten over it.
I am looking forward so much to the New Year... so much to look forward to... ...
