In today's reading from Courage to Change, the author shares that, since coming to AlAnon, they have become aware of choices that they never knew they had. The author now realizes that if the are uncomfortable with something, they don't necessarily HAVE to do it! Of course, the author reflects that this doesn't apply to everything - such as taxes, which need to be done regardless of how one feels about them. In such cases, the author needs to feel things and then act anyway. The author thinks that, sometimes, it is necessary to do things they do not want to do, and that might be why "just for today' suggests doing 2 things each day that we do not want to do. Leading a balanced life requires some self-discipline, so one can pay attention to one's feelings without being tyrannized by them.

Self-discipline - this is a topic I reflect on often. I am great at self-discipline in certain areas of my life, and at certain times of my life. However, there are times and areas of my life where I notice a lack of self-discipline. Luckily, HP gives me plenty of opportunities to develop self-discipline in these areas as well. A recent diagnosis of pre-Diabetes is giving me the opportunity to improve my self-discipline around my eating habits and exercise habits. So far, the dogs are LOVING their increased walk time.

Good morning MIP! Thank you Skorpi for your service and the daily. Sending you positive energy for the changes you are making for your health! I appreciate the ESH and shares above me too. I considered myself 'disciplined' before Al-Anon yet lacked the 'self' part completely. I was very certain to do all that was necessary as required and that 'discipline' I practiced, like many other things was rigid and often controlling.
My sponsor suggested Self-Caring needed to include fun/leisure and I thought that was crazy! After all, I was now an 'adult' and fun was to be had when I was younger. It was suggested I needed to schedule fun/leisure into my self-care in an effort to practice 'balance' - something I felt I was - I was wrong.
Today, I strongly believe what the quote suggests - Self discipline is self caring. Practicing recovery one day at a time, I am more aware of working hard, playing hard and service to others. Putting me first and taking care of my needs helps me be a more positive force daily, and of better service to others. I too am grateful for recovery and the restoration of sanity! Thanks Skorpi for you service and all above shares. Ah yes, self-discipline. In my earlier days, as a person of the arts, I certainly had self-discipline. I hate to admit though, that often it was in a self-destructive way--not eating enough, going to classes and rehearsals when sick, etc. That's all changed now! I truly understand the concept of self-discipline by treating myself with respect. And of course, there are always the things we don't want to do, like going to the dentist, which we do as well. Fun needs to be programmed into our schedule if it does not flow naturally. We can all get this! Lyne

I was on the other end of the spectrum... too much self-discipline! As my world became more chaotic, I clamped down and became more and more rigid. I am working on being more flexible with my life. In turn, this is allowing me to be more flexible and accepting of others as well!

Thank you for your service Skorpi. Great reminder that not every thing that is good for me is going to feel good! I've been forcing myself to get quiet and heal... none of it feels good, but the goal is for something better than what I currently have.
