I'm going up my work street getting ready to go into left lane and I see these really nice young ladies, stopped in the road and I look and its a gorgeous white husky doggie that they hit.....I stopped and asked if i could help lthem, call someone, just assist...They said they called animal services
He wouldn't die..Just kept opening his mouth, trying to yawn and his life blood seeped out of his right ear.....I wanted to cover him up but had nothing in my car...
One girl looked like she was going to get sick..I asked her if she was the unlucky one who had the accident..She said she was....I couldn't help the dog, so I said to her:
"Please don't beat yourself up over it....you didn't let this poor boy loose...you didn't cause this, you were just driving and out he came....It was NOT your fault in any way shape or form...She looked at me and I hope it registered for her, I just had to tell her that this wasn't her fault.....I wanted to cry with her...I had to get to work....so I did my turn and went in across the street from the horrible site...
I came in and told my boss that I was traumatized...I had to come back here in my office to do a med and just BREATHE......I can't get his little face out of my mind....I hope endorphins kicked in and he didn't suffer the way he looked.......God, I just want him to pass and be out of his pain.......
I had to share...I am near tears, but trying to focus on my work today
Thank you for reading me.....I just love animals so much and it kills me to see one suffer and die.......

Reading this made me cry. What an awful experience!
It's so good to see your kindness toward the girl who couldn't stop in time. How many times could we use a comforting word to ease a trauma?
I think you taught her she didn't cause the dog to be on the road, she couldn't control the dog, and she can't cure it.
I hope you can feel better after your de-compression session at work.

Rose and then there is the other story I read on the internet yesterday about a gal (Asian) running in a marathon and who (when running) saw a pup off the side of the road who was lost and confused and so she stopped and picked it up and held it and continued to run the rest of the marathon with it in her palm and when the marathon was done? she took it home and kept it. Cute gal, cuter pup, great image of love. Good job. Keep coming back. ((((hugs))))

The way I look at it - Yes, you could not help the suffering of that poor pup. But your HP knew you could help that girl who was horrified at what happened... thinking that this dog was suffering because of her. YOU were able to confirm for her what was true... she had no control over this situation. Your HP knew you could handle it DESPITE being the animal lover you are - or maybe, BECAUSE OF THE ANIMAL LOVER YOU ARE!
Those "yawns" were because the dog was exhibiting "agonal breathing." It's the brainstem's last-ditch efforts to provide oxygen to vital body organs... it is not true breathing, and occurs after a major compromise of the heart. The reason I say this is so that you know there was little (if anything) you or those girls could've done at that moment (12 years experience as a Veterinarian Technician).
Try to push the picture of that moment out of your head. Go home, hug your furbabies, and truly thank your HP that you were there to be of service to that girl... you gave a gift and don't even know it!!

Thank you everyone for your hugs and love..It was soo hard to concentrate on my work, but somehow I managed and oh I couldn't stop thinking about that poor puppy lying there, dying..But as some of you said, I coudln't help him, but I think I helped the girl who hit him...
Jill: I did decompress at work a bit..Talking, sharing and getting it OUT helped some..i was shaking and near tears when i got to work and everyone was so sweet to me

PnP, Ohhh lady friend, thank you for weighing in with your knowledge..I figured his "yawns" were a death sort of last efforts of life and I think in all honesty he was far enough to the "other side" HOPING, anyway, that he didn't suffer, that he was mostly "out of it" I so appreciated your assurance and comforting words...That poor girl, I felt as sorry for her as she was absolutely traumatized ...I did my best to comfort her and offer support....Every time i found myself idle, I saw that poor doggie's face in my mind/thoughts...I came home and gave my pets Xtra love and care, treats and play....Today, I am just taking it easy..Found some great oldies on you tube that I downloaded for my albums...I'm just gonna work out and chill today....Detoxing the junk I ate last week, (tons of chocolate) with smoothies, lots of water, fruits, day 2 is today and I already feel "cleaner"
Thanks all of you for your support....You know?? I rigged my gates and plugged up ANY exit areas that my pets might get out AND to boot, I supervise them when they are out to play..Then its back in the house with me...They have their many toys and treats, etc., I would absolutely die if anything happened to any of them.......Lots of people dump their pets along the street where our office is on and its heart wrenching...
I remember one little black charmer, a perky lab mix female, I had to lure with MY LUNCH to get her to come into our garage so i could call the shelter to rescue her...she had been dumped the day b4 and salesmen couldn't catch her, but I had the goods.....my protein bars...I had a few of them, peanut butter and rice and I broke off chunks and "lured her" into our garage.....We see strays all the time, walking the streets, wondering why their owner doesn't come back and take them home...Makes me want to cry!!!
I appeal on Facebook, on our rescue doggie pages, to PLEASE take him or her to shelter OR contact those of us who foster, get in touch with our supervisors, but PLEASE don't just dump them like trash..They have honest to goodness feelings..........This puppy I am keeping was a foster I fell in love with and couldn't give up, but I will foster one more, one at a time , if I can help ....
Anyway, thank you al-anon family members for your love and support....I feel better today....

I too, hate to see the "dump-offs." They are so terrified and confused... it does make me want to cry thinking how they must feel wondering where their beloved People are!
