I have an online friend who is hooked on pain pills.........and started using Kratum...Kratom(sp?) to get away from them...... I won't get into the what is legal and what is natural and all that. To me, anything that changes the way I feel/act is an issue. Lately she's been lying, A LOT, this is new for her. She doesn't even see it herself. I'm stepping away until there's a change. Praying there is a change. I looked up the K stuff and all types of terms for it. Hyper mix, sleepy mix, energetic mix and so forth. The "mixes" say enough. In fact, they shout warning!
All the red flags went up when she told me she had tried AA/NA in the past and they were too "just suck it up.........."
I also believe she has a problem with stealing. That's sort of what drugs can do....... I will say, it took awhile to fall into place for me The lying cemented it. The theft is still up for grabs but all signs point to it........somehow she has been unjustly accused by her family many a time for stealing......I would be horrified if my family accused me one. And she's in trouble with a former employer. I kept thinking the truth would come out rather than all the worrying about getting lawyered up but........then the program kicked in. The bottom line is she's an addict and has become toxic in my life. The fun, cheerful person is gone and all is always chaos.......:(
I hate this disease! I'll be praying for her and be there for her if she hits a bottom........Hopefully when she hits the bottom. When the program kicked in, I also realized that the drain of the constant blaming others and all the junk was effecting me too.

Sorry Tude for the loss of your friend....I get it - the drama and chaos gets to be too much and we detach and 'love them from across the street'...
As far as Kratom goes, my youngest did that for a while. It's a nasty habit and it is addictive (meaning there is huge withdrawal beyond the want/need/craving). He used to use the argument that it's all natural and comes from a plant and I too looked into it. Like all things for an alcoholic/addict, it worked until it didn't any longer.

Thank you IAH. I'm so relieved your youngest did it for awhile. Meaning no longer! I keep hearing the same thing. It's "natural" and on and on...so, I had to exit. Prayers for her and that the bottom is sooner than later!!!
I also hear this about weed due to it being legal. Please hear me when I say I am not objecting to anyone using weed, to each his own, it is the message that it is giving and the lives it is ruining, families, jobs etc. Just as with alcohol, too much of anything is a bad thing. One needs to take a good look..........these young people are learning things we didn't have to learn/unlearn.........? Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's all ok?
In physical therapy the other day, the lady who was working with me told me she had a friend who owned a fleet of trucks in this area. The owner had empty trucks and was having trouble keeping his business afloat. What shocked me was the "why." Everyone kept testing positive for weed.......I feel as if I just fell off the pumpkin wagon. I mean seriously!?!?!?!? All these trucks are sitting empty due to weed??? It opens a job for me if it's local and PT works well but my thoughts, the codependent I am, went to how many families are out of money, food, and so forth due to weed??? OMG> really???
Ok, wow, but it's only natural, not addictive and oh my...........sarcasm added here.......I better open my books with my coffee LOL.

I hope in time your friend gets the help she needs. ODAT. I'm sorry for your loss. And I feel this kind of loss is the saddest because it is her choice to abuse herself and not get the help she needs. You sound like your feet are planted in program and know what you need to do for yourself. Great use of program, Lyne

Hi Tude... good for you in recognizing all the red flags with this, and reminded me of an old post of mine, from a few years ago, but still so very true today. Doesn't really matter "what" the addiction is - the antidote is pretty much the same - AA, and lots of work on self.
You aren't alone! My husband was most recently hooked on Kratom and the withdrawal affects are beyond scary. For him, it triggers psychosis. Even though it's legal, it is not safe for everyone, and it remains largely unregulated. And to further frustrations, there isn't much information out there about it. My husband finally realized after this last relapse and withdrawal that Kratom was what was causing the psychosis. Sometimes the affects can take days to kick in, so it doesn't seem like it's the thing causing the symptoms.
Anyway, I hope your friend can find peace, and I hope you know you aren't alone. It's at the same time horrible and a relief that someone else can relate to my story, not many people even know what Kratom is. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks for the article Tom. It puts it all in a concise frame! Charbarr, I know nothing about Kratom except what I have searched out online. Wow, there are more pros than cons but at least enough "cons" to see it is an issue for addiction......I want to say thank you right back. I have the feeling we've not heard the end of the Kratum issues.......and they are just beginning :(
