Last spring my A ex-husband had a collapse and a long spell in the hospital. It wasn't clear whether he was going to pull through, but thankfully he did. He stopped drinking, and I wasn't sure if he was going to stay sober, because he has stopped drinking dozens, maybe hundreds of times before. But apparently he actually did. Nevertheless he died of cirrhosis/liver failure today. It was completely sudden and unexpected. His roommate came home to find him dead. I am still in shock. After the scare of last spring, I thought things were stable at present.
Our kid is asleep (it is night where we are right now). I absolutely dread having to tell him in the morning. He will be devastated.
And despite the alcoholism, I'll give this to my ex - he was a devoted parent and he did the best he could.
I am just horrified and in shock. I hate, hate, hate this disease. How much grief and horror it has caused in the world.

I'm so sorry for your loss my heart is breaking for your child. I also had to tell my son that his father had died. It's a feeling that can never be expressed with words.
