Today's reading in Hope for Today shares about letting go and letting God. The writer discusses a first trip after becoming handicapped. She was anxious to be travelling alone and even a bit more so because her travel was to another country with different customs, etc.
She used her tools to get ready and make the trip. Two days into the trip, she did slip and fall on tile. The human element kicked in first, and she was calling out for help and scared. Then the Al-Anon program kicked in, and she recited the Serenity Prayer and scooted herself to the phone to call for assistance.
Within 5 minutes of making the call, a nurse appeared. The nurse calmed her down, helped her get to the Dr. and then called each day of the trip to check on her. Not only did she get what she needed when she went into Al-Anon mode, she made a new friend - bonus!
She enjoyed the balance of her vacation joyfully and grateful for the warmth of a stranger who became a friend.
Thought for the day --- The Higher Power and the Al-Anon tools: never leave home without them!

As I grow in Al-Anon, I am amazed at how I have transformed from a reactive person to a more responsive person. While my first thought isn't always about the tools and recovery I've experienced, like the person in this daily, if I can pause long enough to let Go and let God, the miracles happen all around me.
I still get anxious over new experiences and events. I was thinking just this week that each time I am anxious about an outing or event, I still tend to project. I am hopeful there will be a day where my projections are about rainbows and pots of gold, yet I'm not there yet. Instead, I tend to add to my anxiety and then remember I am not alone.
My experience is no event or issue has ever been as bad or worse than I projected. If I am honest, most have turned out way better than I ever considered. Trusting God is not always easy, yet it has been rewarding for me. I am grateful member of Al-Anon today and love being reminded to not leave home without my tools and my HP.

Hello IAH, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the HFT's reading regarding the powerful slogan :" Let Go and Let God".
When i first entered program, the slogans were simply "Words" to me and I could not see how embracing them would help. It took many meetings, working the Steps, and talking it over with a sponsor, in order for me to think, know and feel my HP in each day. When that happened I could easily stop attempting to control the uncontrollable and Let Go and let God. Learning how to "Stop". not react in my usual manner and to respond in a well thought out way was a true gift of detachment. I love the slogan "Act do not react "
I must admit that my life did not work out as I would have liked however I was given the tools to accept life on life's terms with serenity wisdom and courage. In retrospect I see that these tools ere all I needed to live life to the fullest.

I read your lines and really, they were/are just 'words' to me. However something made me go back and read again. I am drawn to something you each said and know that much of my rollercoaster of feelings from the past couple of days comes from my 'reacting'. I'm happy enough that I've resolved the situation by moving away and also happy that I can't really connect with this react 'word' at the moment. I know the shared wisdom of yourselves and Al Anon will trickle down eventually. Thanks for everything. XX
