Some not great news from the vet today. My beautiful Chloe, who tested positive for Heartworm and allergies to her food (homemade allergy diet) last weekend, is also having issues with Kidney function.
More tests tomorrow, and I am hoping for the best, but the tapes of losing my Akita Alex (who we just lost last month due to an autoimmune disease that took its toll on his kidney function) and my heeler Griffin (Addison's) won't stop playing in my head.
On the positive side of things, it was Chloe who brought me to this group, and we have had a beautiful two years together. I picked her up the day she was to be euthanized due to some behavioral issues, and every day since has been a true blessing. She was the pup I was holed up with in the basement when I found MIP, and she has been with me every step of my Alanon journey, just as I have been with her every step of her behavioral rehabilitation.

(((Skorpi))) - so very sorry to hear your news. I too am sending positive thoughts and prayers. I've often said there is something truly special and spiritual about rescue dogs! I also believe they are eternally grateful whether they get 10 years or 10 days - to have been rescued by gentle pet loving people.
Know matter the results, stay in the present - just for today!!

I am so sorry, pets can be such great friends. I have had to change my cats food recently because I read something about the old food causing kidney disease.

I have a very happy update about Chloe: The vet thinks her heartworm treatment was successful, and she'll start back up on heartworm preventative in a month, we'll do another heartworm test in 6 months, just to be sure.
But the better news is that her kidney values are back in the high part of the normal range, which was an outcome the vet didn't dare to hope for with her. She's even been cleared to start to walk on a leash again, up to a half mile a day! She'll have to continue with the special diet, allergy shots, and kidney support medication, but I'm beyond thankful that my goofy girl is going to be with us for quite a while.

I am so happy to hear this... pets are sometimes the only ones who get us through the hard times with this disease!
