A friend of mine told me I should go to a co-dependents meeting because those most affected by drinking are co-dependent. She explained that those traits cause all the pain because they don't live their lives and everything the alcoholic is doing affects every aspect of their lives. It made sense to me. What do you think?

Hi wife...
I tried everything I could, everything I could think of, and then I tried something that worked for me and many who came before me: AlAnon.
We each make a choice about what we should do, based on what we feel is best at the time. Only you can decide what is best for you, butI'm sure you will find your way. What ever you choose to do, know that AlAnon is always there for you

You can certainly try other programs such as co dependents however, I found that alanon principles and tools worked best for me

I agree also that knocking on doors and searching amongst what is available out there for us is good practice. Latching on to what works best for most is smart though nothing works over night for me and practicing what others were doing that led to their recovery was the best solution for me. Do what the winners do. Keep coming back ((((hugs))))

Its easier for me to keep it simple. I have been effected by alcoholism which means i have symptoms that would fit many labels like being codependant, depressed, obsessive compulsive. For me when i go searching under these labels i get distracted and so these labels are outside issues for me. Alanon is the solution to all my symptoms. Meetings, sponsor, readings, members.

I'm on the same page as those above me.....I am quite certain I have many symptoms that overlap with other programs or labels - however, my brain goes into overload if I do not keep it simple. I too manage best with our recovery program and am able to apply all we suggest/learn/consider to my life areas that set me off balance.
I'm also of the opinion that we each need to seek out any/all resources to find our own journey to serenity! Do what works for you - great topic...

I'm pretty sure Al anon addresses all the co dependence in us.
I believe that working the Alanon program will release you from co dependence. Yes, I do personally view us as codependents when we are in the thick of it.
The alanon and codependent meetings may be using different language to address the same things.
Do you like to read? Melodie Beatty is the forerunner in healing co-dependence, as far as I know.
My best healing comes when I follow my curiosity and keep in touch with HP, so if you are drawn into the arena of correcting co-dependence, have a look! With Google at our fingertips, we are more blessed than ever.
Sometimes it is one paragraph, one phrase, one conversation, that goes *PING* in our minds and helps shift everything :)

In my experience, any room in which the 12 Steps are earnestly worked offers tools to come home to healing and wholeness. It's not only the program, it's the people who are working it.

I also feel working my al-anon program frees me from a co-dependent outlook.
