The quake hit the northern part of the South Island. It is 10 hours by road from here.
The town of Kaikoura took a big hit. 2,000 people. Two have died and about 10 injured.
In 2010 a hug quake hit Christchurch, a city of 400,000 people. It demolished the central city
and many more were killed or injured.
