As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly: and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caustion in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for higher ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Karilynn - it amazes me that you posted this today.  I'm a regular lurker here, and take away so much wisdom from this board, but this post struck a very personal note for me.  In Feb, my dad died after a long battle with colon cancer.  Last week was our Jewish New Year, and this was the first one I've spent without him - I've been thinking about him a lot lately.  He had this poem framed and it hung in his office for at least 30 years - as long as I can recall.  He did his best to live by those words, and really did succeed.  His life was an inspiration to me, and I carry him on one shoulder and my HP on the other.  Thank you for making me smile through tears - it's a sign to me that he is always going to be here with me to help me face the road ahead.
