I am an oldbie and a newbie at the same time to Alanon. I havn't been going to meetings for some years now, because I have not lived with an alcoholic for many years. HOwever, not long ago, my adult son returned home (which I was happy about--and still am), but the joyous happening also brought home the realization that alanon is a living program that can be used all our lives and now I needed it more than ever.
My son does not do drugs or drink but as you know drinking and drugs are only symptoms of the disease and the attitude, manipulation, cop-outs, excuses, and moodiness can still be there in fullforce. The personality traits that feed into that type of behavior for me, the Alanon, came gushing back and everything I thought I had outgrown was just waiting for the opportunity to gain strength and with my son's return the game was on. Only thing is, the game makes me miserable, unhappy and alone. There are no winners.
I am so glad there is Alanon online as I live in a rural area and getting to meetings is difficult for me. I did not realize how much I have missed the serenity of the steps and the alanon friendships. I am looking forward to finding a sponsor and renewing my life and my relationships.

Welcome. We're glad you re-found Al-Anon.
Thank you for sharing about your son and his alcoholica behavior -- without the drugs and alcohol... I think often in the program it is easy for me to lose sight that the drinking and drugging are just symptoms of the disease. Several members of my family are not active users or drinkers but definitely act like dry drunks! The behavior is just as devastating in some ways for me as when they are using.
I'm glad you are willing to come back to the program. I am sure you have a lot to share here and learn here -- as do all of us. Take care.

Welcome back! This is truly a great place to be. I've learned so much from Alanon in the 3 years I've been here. My A is my husband. He drinks on occasion still and thinks that that is making him a social drinker. Wrong! He has the same symptoms as your son all of the time. Classic dry drunk.
I hope you come back and come often. The message board is a life saver for me. I know I'm not alone :)
