It's denial.  It's safer to think that you are coming down with something than to think that you might have a hangover because you have a drinking problem.  My first husband did the same thing.  In fact, he may still be doing it because he is still active.  I just didn't buy into it and said it was more likely he had a hangover.  He never responded because to do so would mean he would have to admit he had a problem.  Denial. 

Today, I just pray for him.

My "A" doesn't say anything like that. When he has a hangover, he tells me he is hungover. I am not sure why they say that, maybe they are looking for sympathy.

On a side note, when my "A" tells me that he isn't feeling well. I tell him if you're looking for sympathy go look in the dictionary because you won't find it here. LOL, but he knows I only mean it a little.

oh brother, yes!! I have a headache and sneezing and coughing, does not feel like eating. Denial is such a horrible thing. I have been with him several times kicking Heroin. I will see him and he will have the same symptoms and say he has a cold. It really is denial. I know I got so tired of him being sick all the time. love,debilyn

I have a friend who calls me on his "days off" due to getting over/coming down with something. He does have a drinking problem --big "denial"  
I choose not to take his calls after 9 pm, also why I do not associate with him any longer. I never gave it a thought until you wrote this.

Hi Kimmie,

I really think it is true denial.  They don't feel well and can't seem to make the connection between alcohol and bad health.

My scientist husband has made an art form out of this.  It can be hilarious.  He says he is not feeling well and will blame:

1) the cat (he has not been keeping himself clean enough and his germs are saturating the air)

2)  the house (it is an old house full of germs and dust)

3) the weather he says Ohio weather it not meant for humans, either too hot or cold

4)  me, he claims the emotinal stress of "dealing with me" has him worn down and sick

5)  the food he ate, he will say it was "not washed properly at the restaurant"

6)  the electrical fields around the house ever since he saw a show that says it can give you cancer

He can never ever put two and two togehter that he is sick since he drank over two gallons of malt liqour the day before!

In all seriousness, my husband seems to be developing brain damage from so much drinking.  Do you detect a pattern of paranoia here?  I certainly do.  I really think he is too sick to realize the connection between alcohol and not feeling well. Behind his back daugther and I call him "Daddy Hughes" after Howard Hughes, the germaphobic who had OCD.

My husband, like many men, think that since alcohol is "natural" and drunk since prehistoric and bible days that it is good and healthy.  They can't seem to understand that MODERATION is the key like it is in all things.  Even water is lethal when drunk in large quantities, it will dilute your electrolites which control all electiral signals in the body and you can stop your heart.

I don't know about anyone else, but that is what  my husband says.  He says that HE and all of his friends who drink say that it is good for you and healthy and only "women" who have an attitude problem don't like it.  That is the world of the in denial alcoholic. 

So, I really beleive that they are often too sick to make the connection between drinking and alcohol and really don't know why they often don't feel well, so try to find an explanation for th eir bad health which they really try to believe.

My A. never tells me when he has a hangover....but I can see it. His cure is the "hair of the dog that bit him"...pretty obvious when he is feeling punky from drinking too much.
