Hello from vacation. I am staying in New Branfels TX for a weekend of fun with my sister and a few of her friends.

 

Today we tubed the Guadalupe River.

We had a raft with our lunch in coolers tied to the raft in an inner tube

 

One friend was in the raft with his son.

 

We came upon rapids and the raft tumped over and the dad and his 8 year old son were hung up on a rock with an upside down raft

 

So I tried to get to them, in my tube, through fierce raids.

I got close and grabbed at a rock to get closer.

I badly cut my hands on the rock.

Then the force of the rapids had me and I was tumbled downstream.

When I got clear of the rapids I swam to the side and watched.

 

Sure enough, without my well intended help the dad and his son got the raft upright and safely through the rapids.

 

Other tubers helped me to collect our belongings  which were strewn across the river.

 

Later I was talking to the guys wife about trying to help and she said that she has learned that in certain situations everyone has to look out for themselves.

 

As I type with bandaged hands I see just how true that philosophy can be.

 

I just need to continue applying it to my life with my alcoholic husband

 

And I am ever so grateful for this room and for alanon and for being able to have a vacation with my sister. And for the return of my sanity

        ouchy!  I'm sorry u cut ur hands on craggy rocks!   What a way to 'dampen' a pefectly great day!     

 

I understand alanon on many different levels & "philosophically" God or "my" christ consciosness runs much deeper.  I do understand the idea of the 3rd (ergo 4th)  dimension or the trinity, as the Greeks knew the mind-body-spiritual connection -  relationship within each ind(ividual) human being.   

As John Bradshaw said, "we are all born alone (ultimately, it's our own experience) & we die alone" the beauty of that is... we Can rely on ourselves but that is all we can "know for certain"...  and even then, sometimes we surprise ourselves! 

The prgram works & overflows into all aspects of our lives!

I needed the reminder about taking care of myself , I have been doing that ecconomically but not physically

i cant seem to do both yet *L*  maybe that will come

I'm from Austin, went to school in San Marcos and I've 'tubed down that river too. It is really fun, except when my mom, who can't swim, went in a different direction than my sister and I did and was caught up in a bunch of brambles. We hung on to a branch in the river to wait for her (we were separated by an island in the river) and when Mom came out she was all smiles. I had been beside myself wanting to  help and not knowing how and in the end, it all came out okay. Your post just brought back memories.

I'm sure there is a life lesson in all of this. Thanks for sharing.

I was born in New Braunfels!!! And live about 2 hours from there now.  I have tubed down dat river as well.....and also our rivers here in my area.  What a shame you had to cut up your hands like that!!!  Ouch!!!!  But what a wonderful analogy about taking care of ourselves.  A flowing river is more powerful than us.  We have people here every year that drown while tubing, especially during flooding, and so many times it is while trying to save someone else while the person in "trouble" makes it out.  So glad everything turned out okay, and that you are having a great time in Texas!!!   Didja go to Schlitterbahn?  It is great fun!!!!!

My hands are cut deep but they will heal.

I just keep thinking how I try to fix everything and some things are just not mine to fix.

Like the guys raft upside down.

The news today that one of my sisters good friends is in the hospital with a viral infection of the brain and in ICU for 2 days now and unconcious.

My brothers mother-in-law dying of cancer with hospice and she hasn't eaten in 10 days.

My husbands late stage alcoholism, his yellow skin and delirious brain.

The wounds on my hands are reminders to take care of my side of the street,  and let other people take care of theirs

To offer aid and comfort where necessary, a shoulder to cry on for my sister, home cooked meals for my brother and alot of prayers for my husband and all who need them.

David, I did not go to the waterpark, even though we stayed in a condo on the Comal river, just across the street from Sclittenbaum (sp).

We tubed on saturday and went to Seaworld on Sunday. We had behind the scene passes and got to go into the penguin exhibit and then pet and hold penguins with a naturalist.

It was on the way from San Antonio to Houston that my sister got the phone call about her friend and then I drove the 3 hours back to Houston with my bruised hands and my sisters bruised heart and i knew I was meant to be in TX this weekend.

I want to again say how sorry I am that alcoholism destroyed your marriage.

I am so happy that you are finding peace.

I saw my husband yesterday and he seems to be doing well.  I miss the sober person--I miss the person I fell in love with.  We got to sit quietly yesterday hugging and holding hands for 2 hrs and I want him to get well.  I have to be prepared for the fact that he may not get well.
