Hi Everyone,

I found Al Anon two months ago, and started attending meetings and working my program. I was also going to monthly therapy appointments.  My dad was an alcoholic and died when I was very young. I started going to Al Anon meetings because my boyfriend of six months was a heavy drinker. I did the chat room a few times too (as katie30).

My bf and I parted ways in May and my dog got sick and died also, and my therapist put me on Lexapro (5 mg.) She had been suggesting it for months, and I was in bad shape in May so I got a prescription.

Everything is really great now, but I don't really care about advancing with my program. I haven't been to see my therapist for two months. I am only supposed to be on the medicine for six months, and I've never been on anything before.

I am a bit concerned that in four months, I will stop the medicine, and be back in the same place where I was earlier. I asked my therapist and she said to keep taking the medicine.
Things are pretty sunshiney right now, and I don't want that to go away!

Has anyone else experienced this with antidepressants?

I am currently taking Paxil for my depression and anxiety.  I have always had depression tho for as long as I can remember.  I have also been in therapy since I was little for depression.  But I never took the meds until about 10 years ago while in therapy for panic attacks.  It has helped me so much.  But yes after I started taking it I felt like I didn't need therapy anymore cuz everything seemed so much better.  But I tell you if I could afford a really good therapist and get off the meds I would.  I have gained a lot of weight because of the meds and sometimes I feel like I am just ignoring problems that need to be dealt with.  Like I said if you can afford a great therapist I would go for it. They say that a combo of both really is best.  Just my experience tho.  Good luck and I'm glad you are benefitting from the Lexapro.

I suffer from chronic depression. I had this even before my daughter became an alcoholic. I would be glad to share things with you but would rather do it at the private message email here. All you need to do is click my name and it will give you the option of sending me a message. I can then get it by looking above where it says our name after Logged in as. It will also show that you have a message when I reply. If you send me a message that way I will surely share with you my experience with medications. cdb :)

I am also on Lexpro. I with a couple of other ones. I have found that Lexpro has help. I have taken it more then  6 months. I don't think I would be ok if I didn't take any of my med. If you need to talk you can e-mail at any time.
